New Hope’s Valentine’s Day at the Indiana Statehouse

“We must be treated as equals — and communication is the way we can bring this about.” — Louis Braille

Members of New Hope of Indiana’s Aktion Club are passionate about self-advocacy and, as Louis Braille said, communication is the best way to get their message heard. To advocate for themselves and other individuals with disabilities, thirteen Aktion Club members spent their Valentine’s Day at the Indiana Statehouse delivering handmade valentines to lawmakers. While there, they had the opportunity to spread awareness and advocate for lawmakers to consider individuals with disabilities while voting.

Organized by Self-Advocates of Indiana, this event is a great way for individuals with disabilities to ensure their voices are heard. Our Aktion clubbers got to meet with many lawmakers at this year’s event. Check out who they spoke with below.

Daniel Elliot, Indiana State Treasurer

Robb Greene, Indiana State Representative

J.D. Ford, Indiana State Senator

Cherrish Pryor, Indiana State Representative

The individuals we serve appreciate the opportunity to advocate for themselves. We are grateful for the opportunity to participate and look forward to continuing this tradition for years to come.
