Martin Luther King Jr. Day Celebration

27 Jan Martin Luther King Jr. Day Celebration

“Life’s most persistent and urgent question is, ‘What are you doing for others?’” – Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Service to others was of utmost priority to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. This idea was apparent in everything he did. At New Hope, service is one of our seven core values and on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day, we celebrated his legacy through a day of service.

Two service projects were offered at our Payne Rd. location for associates. The first was organizing our Day Services craft room. The second was conducting a deep clean of one of our kitchens. Both projects were much-needed tasks that we normally don’t have the capacity to focus on. Having associates dedicate an hour of their time to accomplish these projects was very beneficial. Both rooms look amazing!

Individuals in our Day Services program remembered Dr. King by writing their dreams in honor of his famous ‘I have a dream…’ speech. Their dreams were then hung up and down the halls for everyone to admire. The individuals in Day Services also completed a service project where they wrote notes to state legislators thanking them for what they have done for the disability community.

After these projects were completed, Allison Wharry, CEO at New Hope, spoke to individuals and associates about the importance of advocating for equality and inclusion just like Dr. King did. The day was concluded by singing ‘happy birthday’ to Dr. King and enjoying cake.

Overall, we all had a wonderful day celebrating the life and accomplishments of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
