Remembering Our Friends

Barbara Donaldson 7/30/1946 - 9/16/2020 Barbara moved into her home at New Hope in 2015 and her housemate and caregivers quickly became her family. She loved the color purple, any music she could dance to, a big smile, looking at magazines where she would pick out clothes she liked or food she wanted to eat. She was sassy and wanted to be the center of attention. She would call her staff "Mommy" as a term of endearment. She enjoyed coloring and doing other arts and crafts with her housemates. She will be missed dearly by all of her housemates and caregivers at...

Zeller, Speak!

Greetings friends, Fall is here and the leaves are beginning to change color and crunch under our feet and paws! I love fall weather, and there are so many things to do. My favorite is a long walk through the woods. Although my age makes those long walks short ones now! Fall brings us pumpkins and apples and trips to the orchard. It is a good time to go to the zoo since the animals are more active in the cooler weather. New Hope is active too with virtual events like pumpkin decorating with Aktion Club, an online version of our annual Fall Festival and...

A Career Full of Smiles

New Hope client Peggy Sales spent the last two decades helping others at her job at Walgreens where she cleaned, stocked shelves and helped out wherever she was needed. The most rewarding part of her job, though, was sharing a smile with someone else. Anyone who knows Peggy knows that she is full of joy! She enjoys sharing that joy with others in her everyday life and especially enjoyed doing so at her job. Recently, Peggy retired after 25 years on the job at Walgreens. While she'll miss her coworkers (and the extra money!), she is looking forward to spending more...

Service Spotlight: DSP Week 2020

New Hope celebrated DSP Recognition Week September 14th-20th, and continues to celebrate our amazing Direct Support Professionals (DSPs) each and every day. The caregivers featured here are outstanding examples of New Hope's Core Values of Service and Dedication. Thank you to each of them and the hundreds of other caregivers who make New Hope the organization it is today. Denise Winbush I chose to become a DSP, because I was searching for a job that was truly centered around helping others. Retail and customer service were okay, but it just felt like I was there to do my shift and make my...

Mission Minute: The Heart of New Hope

Every year in September, New Hope celebrates Direct Support Professional (DSP) Recognition Week, a few days set aside to celebrate the selfless caregivers who support the individuals we serve in so many ways. DSPs empower individuals with disabilities to live, learn and be a part of the workforce. DSPs assist the individuals they serve with daily living activities, transportation, general behavior support, and help create a feeling of home while building friendships with those they serve. DSPs also enable family members of those with disabilities to take a break, go to work or school, or care for their other...

A Smile that Lights Up the Room

One of Vicky Cross’s favorite things to do in August is visit the Indiana State Fair with her friends and staff from New Hope. This year, she was disappointed to miss it, but she’s finding lots of other fun things to do this summer. Vicky has been served by New Hope since 2015 when she moved into one of our Supported Living homes with one of her childhood friends, Jeannette. As someone who enjoys talking to other people, Vicky has enjoyed New Hope’s Day Services program as well, making lots of good friends there. She has a great memory and always...

A Note from Allison: Celebrate DSPs

Happy Hot August! As a parent, others will tell you that the days are long, but the months are quick. That has certainly been true at New Hope this year. Each day has brought new challenges and opportunities for us to grow in our mission, but the busy pace of the day-to-day has made the months go by so quickly. I can hardly believe that August is coming to an end! While this summer wasn’t quite normal, we’ve been happy to find the small pleasures of life still make us smile. The individuals we serve have enjoyed afternoons in the garden, connecting...

New Hope Celebrates DSP Week

Direct Support Professionals, or DSPs, are a truly under-appreciated group of dedicated caregivers. Not only do they provide necessary healthcare, they are often the biggest source of support for our most vulnerable neighbors. Individuals with disabilities often rely on DSPs for their daily needs such as personal care, meal preparation, medication administration and more. These caregivers are often the much needed support that allows individuals with disabilities to live as independently as possible. It is because of them that organizations like New Hope are able to provide high quality care. Each year in September, we recognize DSP Week, and this year,...

Remembering Our Friends

Barry Clark 10/27/1955 - 8/9/2020 Barry was served by New Hope for many years. He even worked in the workshop at New Hope back in the facility days and spoke fondly of his experiences. He was an avid storyteller and history buff and loved discussing the inner workings of WWI planes. He loved model cars, trains and planes and especially enjoyed visits to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway with friends and family. On any given day, you could find Barry quietly working on his various crafts that he would gift to friends and family. Barry loved fishing and always had a goal to...

Zeller, Speak!

Greetings friends, I hope you are well and that you have been enjoying some of our beautiful weather, I know I have. The AIM groups have been busy visiting lots of parks, taking advantage of hiking trails and enjoying lunch outside. They even visited a park in Hamilton County that boasts a haunted bridge. Next week they will be visiting a llama farm. Day Services has been enjoying the weather too. They took some pictures with the beautiful sunflowers at Payne Road that our friend Kathe Rae helped plant. Castleton has enjoyed their outside space as well. It is disappointing that things are still the...

Service Spotlight: Kelsie Winters

This month, Kelsie Winters is celebrating her 2-year service anniversary at New Hope of Indiana as Executive Assistant to the CEO, but it's really the rest of New Hope that's celebrating, because we are lucky to have Kelsie! In her role as Executive Assistant, Kelsie is responsible for supporting the work of the CEO, the Board of Directors and the leadership team all while acting as an ambassador for New Hope's mission. Her job description might seem vague to some, but that's because every day is different and requires flexibility to support a large team with a variety of projects. While...

Mission Minute: Connections of Hope

Kindness and Consideration Are the Only Skills Necessary By Lauren Palmer I didn’t know much about my friend and neighbor Amanda Boyd’s job, but I knew she worked with individuals who have special needs. I also knew she was extremely passionate about it. So when Amanda invited me to a community engagement event at New Hope a few years ago, I gladly accepted. I’m ashamed to admit I have not spent much time interacting with people who have special needs, and that I have sometimes felt like I didn’t know quite what to say or how to engage with someone whose abilities and...

Volunteers Needed

While COVID-19 has changed the way New Hope is able to utilize our generous and dedicated volunteers, we are still in need of your help! Volunteer opportunities are available for both individuals and groups and can be either virtual from the comfort of your own home or in-person at our Payne Road offices. Volunteering at New Hope can be especially rewarding as volunteers bring their own interests, passions and talents to the individuals we serve. The list of opportunities below is by no means exhaustive - we want you to bring your ideas to us as well! Special thanks to...

A Note from Allison: An Unexpected Year

Summer greetings to our New Hope family! July is the beginning of New Hope’s fiscal year when we take time to reflect on our progress toward our strategic goals and our plans for the new year. And while this reflection has often brought me pride, this year I am especially in awe of the amazing accomplishments of our #TeamNewHope! In the first half of our fiscal year, we were so excited to launch Cheese and Thank You, the unique food truck program which provides vocational training to young adults with disabilities. We also welcomed several new young people to our family...

Zeller, Speak!

Greetings Friends, I hope you are doing well and enjoying the sunshine. I know I am loving laying in the grass and soaking up some rays! I am pleased to report the AIM groups are up and running. They are doing lots of outdoor activities and having fun. I heard they went to the haunted bridge in Avon, Garfield Park, played basketball and enjoyed some inside games and fun. It is nice to see everyone and they are happy to be here and out of the house. Richie reports, “The people in our group are fun and cool to hang out with”. Another...

New Hope’s DEI Advisory Committee

While this year has brought many unexpected challenges, New Hope is excited to take this opportunity to learn from our mistakes, to listen to the many different voices of our own associates, and to be a leader for inclusion in our community. In light of the many recent events which have brought our conversations to the topic of systemic racism, New Hope has created a Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Advisory Committee made up of associates of different backgrounds, who serve at different levels in our organization. The committee met for the first time this month to discuss issues related to...

Walking for Dreams is August 16th

Each year, our friends at the Sycamore Foundation organize Walking for Dreams, an annual walk to support dozens of local nonprofit organizations like New Hope. Due to COVID-19, May's Walking for Dreams has been rescheduled for August 16th and several changes have been made to make sure the event is safe and meaningful for everyone involved. New Hope will be participating virtually rather than gathering downtown as usual in hopes that our walkers will stay safe and healthy. This means that you can walk in your own neighborhood on your own schedule at your own convenience! Just find time the week...

Remembering Our Friends

Joy Martin 2/24/1951 - 7/6/2020 Joy lived at New Hope for over 30 years and the associates and residents became her family. She was the proud mother to her fur baby (cat), Ebony. Joy was a light to all those who knew her. She never met a stranger and enjoyed meeting other people while going out in the community. Joy loved shopping, coloring, and everything that glittered and sparkled. As you can imagine, Christmas was Joy’s favorite holiday. During Christmas, Joy was the happiest decorating the tree, receiving gifts, and eating homemade dinner. But of all these things, Joy loved her...

Excited to Be Back

Denni is one of New Hope's most bubbly and friendly clients, almost always smiling and saying hello to everyone she meets! She lives at home with her Mom and Dad and Gabby the cat. She meows real loud! She also has two older brothers that don’t live at home anymore. Denni graduated from Brownsburg High School and transitioned to the AIM program when the second group started last year. She makes a great addition to the group as she speaks her mind and is very fashionable! While she enjoys her time at New Hope, she also has a long-time staff...

Service Spotlight: Andrea Paille

For several months, New Hope thought about how best to transform our training programs to both meet the State’s requirements and grow our associates to meet their potential. We created a new position to facilitate a meaningful learning program for all associates with the title of Learning and Development Specialist, and earlier this year, we welcomed Andrea Paille to our team to fill this new role. Andrea comes to New Hope with a Bachelors degree in Psychology and a Masters degree and license in Clinical and Humanistic Psychology. She is passionate about serving others and helping them grow through personal and...
