Zeller, Speak!

27 Nov - Zeller, Speak!

Greetings Friends, I’m back from a brief medical leave, and I thank you all for the prayers, love and well wishes sent my way. It is, indeed, good to be loved. While I was away, something very special happened…another CCI dog joined us at our Castleton Day Services location!! Her name is Oreo and her handler, Dorine Saladin (commonly known as DG), is a Team Leader at the Castleton location. The Regional Headquarters for Canine Companions for Independence is in Dublin, Ohio. That is where DG went to be matched with Oreo and learn all about how to work with her. They were in...

Greetings friends! I am happy to tell you that the Castleton Day Services program is getting a Facility dog from Canine Companions for Independence!! That is where I came from too. Dorine Saladin, fondly known as DG, will be traveling to the regional center of Canine Companions in Dublin, Ohio, to be trained with the dog. She will be there for a full week, learning all kinds of things and being matched with a dog. The dog may be male or female, black or yellow, a golden retriever or a lab or a mix of the two. We don’t know yet...

Greetings, friends! Oh my gosh summer is over! How did that happen? I guess I will soon be rolling in leaves instead of grass. So it goes. And speaking of going, the AIM group started August 20th and they are having a great time out in their community! They have been to Keep Indianapolis Beautiful, the library, Holiday Park and the nature center. They have been lots of places while riding in the Ford Flex that Pearson Ford so generously supported. I hope everyone had a happy and safe summer. As we are entering Fall just think of all there is to do…long...

Greetings, my friends! This month we celebrate the 28th Anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act, also known as ADA which was signed into law by President George H.W. Bush on July 26, 1990. The intent of this law was to guarantee that persons with disabilities have the same opportunities to participate in community life as persons without disabilities. This includes housing, employment, accessibility issues, participating in local and State government and services and so much more. This law literally opened doors for people by requiring accessible entrances for people with mobility issues and has provided for handicapped parking spaces. Because of the...

Greetings, my friends!   Ah summer…when the days are long and the nights are stuffy. I hope you are enjoying the weather as much as I am! Don’t forget to use your sunscreen and drink lots of water during the summer and be sure you do not leave pets or children in the car alone please. There are many exciting things going on this summer! Individuals in Day Services are doing a lot of gardening and have even harvested some of the results already. Some are participating in the Helpings of Hope Gardens and others in Keep Indianapolis Beautiful. We have also developed a...

We're still working on naming the truck so watch your email for a chance to vote on your favorite name! We will be serving mac-n-cheese with all kinds of toppings like barbecue, hot chicken, veggies, bacon, etc. It's making my mouth water, just thinking about it! This will be the first food truck in the nation to have individuals with disabilities both prepare and sell the food. We will be teaching basic culinary skills in food preparation, customer service...

Greetings, my friends. Remember when you left high school and you had to figure out what was next? There were lots of options to think about: work, attend college or trade school, move out of state, join the Peace Corps or VISTA. There were lots of choices. Too often for students with disabilities who are exiting high school, there aren’t a lot of choices. That’s why I am excited to tell you about a NEW program New Hope of Indiana is starting in August 2018! Our new program is specifically designed to offer those students exiting high school, another choice in the...

by Zeller, CCI Facility Dog and NHI Employee One of the nicest things that ever happened to me at New Hope, happened on my very first day! I came in the front door and I could see a lot of people down the hallway, and I realized they were waiting to meet ME! I was so excited and so were they. I was smothered with love and my heart felt like it might burst with joy! My heart feels like that a lot around here...
