Community and Corporate Partners

28 Sep - Charitable Sponsors are an Asset to the Community

As New Hope prepares for the fourth annual Silver Cup Celebration this week, we are feeling especially grateful for our many corporate sponsors and community partners who have made this year's event possible. At the very first Silver Cup Celebration, the event emcee, Anne Marie Tiernon, asked guests to take a moment to look at the list of sponsors and to take note, because we as consumers have a choice to make. Every time we go to the store, buy a car, open a bank account, repair our home or make any other buying decision, we are choosing how to...

20 Aug - Lt. Gov. Crouch Urges Employers to Hire Hoosiers with Disabilities

Indiana Lieutenant Governor Suzanne Crouch today urged Indiana employers to solve their workforce crisis by hiring individuals with disabilities. Crouch made her comments during a visit to New Hope of Indiana in Indianapolis as part of her Inauguration Celebration. “Nationally, the unemployment rate for individuals with developmental disabilities is over 70 percent,” Crouch said. “Right now, as I travel the state, I see more ‘Now Hiring’ signs than I have in my entire career as a public official. And people with disabilities are ready to step up and rejoin the workforce to bring Indiana to its most prosperous place in years.” Crouch...

27 Jul - Aktion Club Hosts Reunion

This July, New Hope's Aktion Club enjoyed its first in-person event since February 2020. The group hosted its reunion cookout with the help of volunteers from Kiwanis Club of Northwest Indianapolis. Despite some rain, the group enjoyed being together for the first time in well over a year. The meeting took place thanks to Kiwanis advisors and support from New Hope associates. While most of the club's business was pushed to the next meeting in order to make room for fellowship and fun, the group was excited to discuss plans to host the annual Fall Festival at New Hope in...

28 Jun - Celebrating Independence

by Jenny Pfeil, Director of Development When you think of the 4th of July holiday, what images come to mind? Red, white and blue bunting on a porch? Cookouts, fireworks and time with friends and family? Traveling and relaxation? For me, it’s all about celebrating independence. Our country, our independence and our freedom are ever evolving. We have all seen first-hand that there is work to do in ensuring that every citizen enjoys the freedoms our forefathers envisioned. Freedom and independence, like people, come in many unique and diverse forms. And there are many populations who experience barriers to...

24 May - Back in Business

This May has, in many ways, felt nearly normal. While we're still wearing our masks, screening our health, keeping our distance and generally being cautious, we are also SO EXCITED to feel like the end of the pandemic is truly in sight. For New Hope, May is always a busy month full of community events, associate gatherings and more. Typically, our individuals spend time at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway (IMS) as race teams prepare for the Indy 500 at the end of the month. While we weren't able to get back to the track, we still celebrated May the Indy...

[caption id="attachment_26150" align="alignleft" width="300"] 2019 Aktion Club Food Drive[/caption]Kiwanis Aktion Clubs are important opportunities for adults with disabilities to gain leadership skills and practice community-based philanthropy. In a typical year, New Hope's Kiwanis Aktion Club raises a few hundred dollars and collects some in-kind gifts for local nonprofits, but what members cherish more than anything is the sense of camaraderie and the opportunity to be a leader in our community. 2020 has been anything but typical though. This year, our dedicated Aktion Club Board of Directors has been working hard to keep everyone at New Hope in good spirits and...

New Hope will be participating virtually rather than gathering downtown as usual in hopes that our walkers will stay safe and healthy. This means that you can walk in your own neighborhood on your own schedule at your own convenience! Just find time the week...

13 Dec - Thanks to American Family Insurance Dreams Foundation

This fall, New Hope was proud to accept a grant of $2,500 from the American Family Insurance Dreams Foundation. It wasn't a typical grant, though, and we never asked for the money. In fact, it was a New Hope mother who believes in our mission that wanted to give back to us. Eldonna Merritt, the mother of one of the individuals we serve, saw an email from her insurance company, American Family Insurance, inviting her to nominate a deserving nonprofit for their Dreams Foundation Community of Dreamers grant program. After years of working with New Hope to provide her son with...

Our Vocational Services team works with dozens of individuals who are looking for assistance preparing for, finding and keeping meaningful employment. Vocational Services Team Leader, Patrick Mitchell, loves working with the people he serves. He enjoys the challenge of helping them set and achieve their goals, sometimes lofty. He says that the trick is helping to find realistic, attainable goals that have...

Their new class, AdaptFit, allows nearly a dozen young adults with disabilities to enjoy the benefits of CrossFit training each week including learning new functional skills, setting personal goals and getting out of their comfort zones. 27 Aug - Zeller, Speak!

Greetings friends, I arrived at New Hope on February 14, 2011! I turned 2 on February 17, 2011. I am now 10.5 years old. I remember what a fun first week it was. I came from Canine Companions for Independence, a wonderful national organization that places service dogs like me at no cost. On Saturday 8/24/19, New Hope hosted a puppy raiser workshop and a day of re-certifications for current working dogs for Canine Companions for Independence. I felt like I was watching my life all over again. From the littlest puppies to dogs in service to humans for years, they were all...

26 Aug - The Partnership that Saved the Day

In the spring of 2018, New Hope was excited to finally purchase the food truck that would make our Food Truck Program a reality. We had picked out a name (Cheese and Thank You), finished the fundraising that we needed in order to purchase the truck itself, designed a logo and found a certified kitchen to rent for food prep. We were on our way to getting the truck painted and certified by the county. We bought the truck from a nice family in Southern Indiana and it was delivered on a Friday. By Monday, we'd heard the bad news...

26 Aug - Supported Decision-Making Explained

by Nick Parker, Attorney, Indiana Legal Services In July, the state of Indiana passed a new law that recognizes “Supported Decision-Making” as a form of decision-making support. Supported Decision-Making lets anyone in our state take charge of their own decision-making in the form of a helpful life-guiding document, addressing such needs as life goals, health, wellness, financial planning, safety, scheduling, work or school life, and daily decision-making. This "agreement" lays out who can (and cannot) help, what help is needed, and how help is to be delivered. It is a remarkable new concept that is gaining steam across...
