26 Jan - COVID-19 Vaccines at New Hope

On New Years Eve, New Hope received the notification that we had been waiting for - New Hope's essential caregivers were officially eligible to receive their COVID-19 vaccines! We quickly got the word out to those associates deemed eligible to receive the vaccine and they began scheduling their appointments as soon as January 1st. New Hope of Indiana believes that the best and quickest way to end the pandemic is for the majority of people to receive the COVID-19 vaccine. To help our associates make an informed decision, New Hope has provided a number of resources including a conversation with...

26 Jan - A Note from Allison: Be Brave

Winter greetings friends, I hope your new year is off to a happy and healthy start! I doubt that 2021 has been exactly what any of us expected so far. But after the violence at the Capitol on January 6th, I was encouraged by the words of Amanda Gorman’s inaugural poem last week: “We will rebuild, reconcile and recover and every known nook of our nation and every corner called our country, our people diverse and beautiful will emerge, battered and beautiful. When day comes we step out of the shade, aflame and unafraid. The new dawn blooms as we...

26 Jan - Zeller, Speak!

Greetings friends, I hope this finds you and yours well and happy as we move into February. February is a very special month to me. Valentine’s Day marks my 10th year as a part of New Hope. And on February 17th, I will turn 12, which in dog years is 84 years old! I guess that explains why I move a little slower. I have felt so much love here and shared it with everyone. I have made so many friends at New Hope and I look forward to when I will get to see them all again. It has been a...

26 Jan - New Hope Supports Associates in Need

While many of our friends and followers know just how significantly the pandemic has affected New Hope's operations and the individuals we serve, there is another part of our New Hope community who has suffered just as significantly - our associates. Just as many of our neighbors have faced additional hardship over the last several months, members of #TeamNewHope watched as their spouses, partners and other family members lost their jobs or saw reduced wages. Many of them lost reliable childcare or, at the least, faced major changes to their children's education. Many of our caregivers have worried about the...

Karron “Luddie” Kendrick 6/25/1961 - 1/15/2021 Luddie resided at New Hope's Demarillac Group Home for many years. She attended Day Service Program. Though nonverbal, Luddie had several ways of communicating her feelings and her staff was always able to understand her needs. She loved the warm weather and would enjoy sitting on the back patio in the swing. When she was in a good mood she would extend her hand to you to let you know that she wanted to take a walk outside or wanted to take a nap in her bedroom. Her roommates and staff are deeply saddened by her...

29 Dec - Holidays at Home

If we learned only one thing this year, it was how to cope with change. Most people don't like change or but 2020 left us no choice. In the weeks leading up to the holiday season, New Hope's leaders had countless discussions about the safety concerns related to COVID-19 spread in our community and the additional risk that family visits would carry this year. New Hope made the difficult decision to limit these visits including family visiting New Hope homes or New Hope individuals visiting their family home. Without these visits, most New Hope clients spent the holidays at their...

29 Dec - A Note from Allison: Onward

Happy New Year! If you’re feeling at all like I am, you are probably counting down the days to the new year with anticipation for better times to come. This year has been tremendously challenging and has brought with it much stress, uncertainty and sorrow. I am so relieved that 2020 is finally coming to an end and that we can begin to look forward to 2021 with wishes of hope, healing and unity. Even though 2020 has been tough - very tough - there have been many bright lights. The first was, and still is, New Hope’s hundreds of frontline caregivers:...

Bonita "Bonnie" Hasemeyer 8/11/1956 – 12/8/2020 Bonnie was one of New Hope's first individuals served, joining us back in 1978. She was fiercely independent! She loved working at Walmart as a greeter and in the electronics department for over 20 years. She could talk your ear off about life and loved to paint. She was involved in Noble’s art program and even sold some of her paintings over the years. One currently hangs proudly in the office of New Hope's CEO, Allison Wharry. Bonnie had a huge smile and loved to share stories with others. She will be dearly missed by her...

28 Dec - Mission Minute: Service & Dedication

In a year where celebrations are virtual and teams are working remotely, it has been challenging to recognize the dedicated associates with milestone service anniversaries this year. These associates have given years, some even decades, to fulfill New Hope's mission of providing holistic services and resources to persons with disabilities and their families while advocating to advance the opportunities for those in need of support. Most of them are Direct Support Professionals (DSPs) whose daily job duties include supporting individuals with disabilities with everyday tasks such as showering, grocery shopping, taking medication and more. You'll also find a number of...

24 Nov - Mission Minute: A Lesson in Gratitude

With Thanksgiving just days away, many people have gratitude on their minds. At New Hope, we've been practicing gratitude all year! This year especially, we are incredibly grateful for our many dedicated caregivers and all those who support our clients as part of #TeamNewHope. We asked several members of our New Hope community to share what they're thankful for this year. The most common answers were family, coworkers, staff, a safe home, a stable job and their New Hope community. Richie, former Cheese and Thank You crew member and current AIMster, shared his blessings during our Thanksgiving turkey craft. "The...

24 Nov - Hope for the Holidays Continues

Every year for over 20 years, our friends at Ascension St. Vincent bring hope and offer holiday cheer to the individuals at New Hope who may not otherwise have much to celebrate. Hope for the Holidays is a program in which St. Vincent staff or departments sponsor patients, former patients or other individuals served through St. Vincent’s ministries who might be in need of some extra hope during the holidays. In a year with so many other changes, we were happy to learn that Hope for the Holidays would still be happening. This year, over 50 individuals with disabilities, and...

24 Nov - When Detours are Part of the Journey

Allen Saunders once wrote “Life is what happens to us while we are making other plans.” In 1992, other plans for DeShawn Hale included graduating from Indiana University where she was studying on an academic scholarship and soon to be venturing out on a new career. But when she became pregnant in her senior year and her child was born three months prematurely, her dreams, aspirations and career were put on indefinite hold. Her son Christian was born with what would later be diagnosed as Cerebral Palsy and Failure to Thrive. He spent his first three months...

24 Nov - Zeller, Speak!

Greetings friends, It is hard to believe Thanksgiving is already here. It has been a challenging year for all of us and those challenges continue as we navigate the world with Covid -19 still so prevalent. It can be scary and frustrating. Still, there is still so much for which to be thankful. Here are just a few of the things for which I am grateful – my family, my friends at New Hope, a new bone, a treat, the way the sun feels on my back, fresh cut grass, crispy leaves, smiles, pats on my head, new collars, my toys, dropped...
